This decorative art niche was one design element within an overall staircase renovation that included new iron railings, hardwood stair treads and Spanish tiles that replaced the carpet.
Spanish Staircase: Before and After
For the staircase remodel, I will start with the before and after photos of the staircase remodel. They will show you how we transformed an ugly, tract house original staircase into a graceful, beautiful Spanish-style staircase.
BEFORE: The original staircase- before we did any changes to it. It had a basic tract house layout, with run of the mill carpet. Short walls enclosed the steps, and glass panels were installed as a way to keep it light and airy.
DEMO Day: Here is a photo of the beginning of demo. The glass railing sections have been removed from the pony walls. The idea was to open up the staircase and expose each individual stair tread.
Collaborating with a client who is a professional designer was great. I particularly like the tiles, flooring and railing details he chose for his project. AFTER Photo: the individual stairs are opened up, and the wood floors, Spanish blue tiles and wrought iron railings completely change the look of this staircase.
Planning a Spanish Staircase with Art Niche
When designing your Spanish staircase, consider adding a decorative art niche into your composition. It is an ideal location for adding charm and great visual impact. In the interior of your own home, look for places enhance the experience of living in the space.
We picked the staircase as a perfect spot for our custom art niche for these reasons:
1) It would become a new focal point enjoyed from many vantage points.
2) The underside of the staircase had “extra space”, which provided the opportunity for a deeper depth to the niche.
The contractor crew carry a Spanish-style barn door past the nearly finished art niche. They are heading upstairs where they will install the barn door at the entry to the primary suite bath.
Her, the custom Spanish railing fabricators arrived and begin installing the iron railing. These larger sections of railing were fabricated off site at their shop. The Artisan welder temporarily tacks the large wrought iron rail sections into place. Once everything was aligned perfectly, they made their final welds.
The images on this page help illustrate the dramatic transformation you can achieve when developing interior spaces with traditional Spanish-style building methods and materials.
materials that look great with Spanish Interiors
When designing and building your own Spanish home, consider materials that will accentuate the overall composition of each room. For example, the scroll detail of the iron railing coordinates nicely with the scallop top of the niche. BELOW: A coved plaster ceiling detail was also custom designed for this project.
When building your own custom wall niche, consider adapting a classic design. We experimented with different ideas, but and decided to create our own, custom 3 scallop top (vs. a standard arch top niche).
To accomplish this custom niche design, our group went back and forth discussing, refining and adjusting the design. We did this on scratch paper, then mocked up our ideas with red rosin paper before building the final details.

At certain times of the day the sunlight hits the wall just right and accentuates all the craftsmanship that went into the composition.
