Jeff Doubét Talks About – Spanish Garage Door Design: Anxiety Reducing Designer Tips
“Are you struggling with SGDDA? Commonly known as Spanish Garage Door Design Anxiety? Well, I’m a Spanish home designer in Santa Barbara- and I wanted to share more pro insights to help you out!
My career specializing in Spanish Homes and Landscapes started out in 2003, and since then I’ve learned a lot about designing Spanish garage doors!
But today, I’m specifically showing you a quality example of a Santa Barbara style Spanish garage door that’s pleasing to the eye, and fits perfectly into classic Santa Barbara Spanish architecture.
I actually feature this home in a separate post, where I showcase a local Santa Barbara Landscape Designer. And there, you can see the entire home and how this garage door fits into the overall design scheme of her landscape.
So, this specific image that I’m posting today provides a visual for the design tips I think you should be thinking about while designing your own special project.
First off, the arched opening is actually… built in front of a basic wood garage door. So, the tip here is you can get away with a relatively affordable wood garage door, but… you embellish it with Spanish details.
In other words, thickening the wall where this garage door will be recessed. And I will share you a link to another post where I actually show you framing details, and actually how to do all of that.
When the previous owner was actually flipping this house, they completely changed the colors to classic Santa Barbara Spanish-style colors, you know the classic white for the plaster walls, and then this beautiful “Santa Barbara Blue” on the garage doors. And that made a huge improvement. So simply focusing on your exterior colors is gonna be a big win for you.
They also brought in iron hinges, and for lack of a better term… “door handles” and that’s just a little bit of Spanish jewelry that you know, can be added to a affordable Spanish garage door.
The photo also illustrates how clay pots and vines can be grown up and over your garage door. And I guess I would just encourage you to check out my other blog posts to see…
You know, this is a double car garage, and this photo also illustrates how you can separate the two individual garage doors if you have enough width on your garage. And that makes it look a lot more high-end as well, when you have individual garage doors for each car.
