Jeff Doubet shares plaster vent grilles, how-to advice, design insights and a snapshot inside a Spanish home.  Plaster register grilles require planning, more than typical surface mount vent covers. It is a project you will need to coordinate with several trades.

Spanish-Style Plaster Register Grille Alternatives on Amazon

I have been recommending plaster vent grilles, as well as cast iron and aluminum floor, ceiling and wall register grilles and vent covers since 2003. If you do not you have the budget (or bandwidth) to take on a custom plaster register grille specification project, there are high quality alternatives readily available on Amazon.

Spanish Home Designer Tips for Decorative Plaster Vent Grilles

1) Your framer will need to have rough opening specs before he frames. The plaster register vents can be 1.5″ – 2″ thick, and are recessed into the wall. Typically within newly fabricated metal ductwork, as well.

2) Depending on the size of your home and HVAC system (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), you will likely need to consult with an air flow specialist familiar with plaster register grilles.

3) There is a mathematical formula to properly size the plaster register grille(s). The square footage of your home, as well as it’s relation to the height of your ceilings are part of the calculation. The size and specifications of your HVAC system is partially determined by how much volume of air is in your home.

4) The design of the register grille is also taken into account. Some designs have larger decorative holes, which means they have more open air flow through the register.

5) My experience has been the fabricators of the grilles often have in-house staff to help. Your architect or General Contractor can also guide you in this important step to order proper sizing.
